The phrase for “bless you” in German is Gesundheit!
Whenever someone sneezes in Germany, the polite response is to say Gesundheit! It literally means health — wishing the person good health after a sneeze.
Examples
-
Hatschi! – Gesundheit!
Achoo! – Bless you!
-
Sie hat geniest und alle sagten “Gesundheit!”
She sneezed and everyone said “bless you!”
-
Gesundheit! Bist du erkältet?
Bless you! Do you have a cold?
Er hat dreimal geniest – dreimal Gesundheit!
He sneezed three times – bless you three times!
Danke für das Gesundheit.
Thanks for the bless you.
Sie rief aus dem anderen Zimmer: “Gesundheit!”
She shouted from the other room: “Bless you!”
Where English uses Bless you with its religious origins, German uses a phrase that simply wishes someone well-being. Many other European languages also use “health” expressions after sneezing, such as salud in Spanish or salute in Italian.
