If someone sneezes in Spanish, the most common thing to say is ¡salud!.
The word ¡salud! (pronounced sah-LOOD) literally means “health.”
It’s used after someone sneezes, just like bless you in English.
Examples
In Spain and Latin America, there’s a playful custom when someone sneezes multiple times:
-
First sneeze: ¡Salud! (Health!)
-
Second sneeze: ¡Dinero! (Money!)
-
Third sneeze: ¡Amor! (Love!)
It’s a fun way to wish someone health, wealth, and love!
Cuando estornudé, mi amigo dijo “¡salud!”
When I sneezed, my friend said “bless you!”
-
¡Salud! ¿Estás resfriado?
Bless you! Are you coming down with a cold?
-
Alguien gritó “¡salud!” desde la otra sala.
Someone shouted “bless you” from the other room.
So, the word ¡salud! is the go-to way to say bless you in Spanish.
The word salud comes from the Latin salus, meaning health, safety, or well-being. When you say ¡salud! after a sneeze, you’re literally wishing the other person good health.
