Saúde literally means health — and it’s the most common toast in Portugal.
Examples
Saúde e felicidades!
Cheers and best wishes!
Um brinde – saúde!
A toast – cheers!
Bebamos à nossa saúde!
Let’s drink to our health!
In Portugal, people almost always say saúde when clinking glasses.
It’s said with eye contact and a smile.
You might also hear:
Saúde comes from the Latin salus, meaning health, safety, and well-being.
