If you’re making a toast in Spanish, the word you’ll want to know is ¡salud!
The Word for “Cheers” in Spanish
The most common way to say “cheers” in Spanish is ¡salud! (pronounced sah-LOOD).
It literally means health and is used when raising a glass.
Examples
¡Salud! – Por una noche maravillosa. Cheers! To a wonderful evening.
Levantaron las copas y dijeron “¡salud!” They raised their glasses and said “cheers!”
¡Salud! Espero que tengas un buen viaje. Cheers! I hope you have a good trip.
🥂 Cultural Insight
In Spain and Latin America, ¡salud! is the traditional toast, wishing health to everyone at the table.
You might also hear ¡chin chin! — a playful alternative borrowed from Italian.
Todos dijeron “¡chin chin!” antes de beber. Everyone said “cheers!” before drinking.
Brindamos por el éxito del proyecto – ¡salud! We toasted to the project’s success – cheers!
“Cheers” as “Thank You”
In British English, people often use “cheers” to mean thank you. In Spanish, you wouldn’t use salud for this. Instead, you would simply say gracias.
🌱 Rooted in Meaning
The word salud comes from the Latin salus, meaning health or well-being. When you raise your glass and say ¡salud!, you’re literally wishing good health to those around you.
