When you’re learning Spanish, one of the first and friendliest words to know is hola.
The word “hi” in Spanish is hola (pronounced OH-lah).
You can use it at any time of day — it’s a simple, universal greeting.
Hola Pedro, ¿cómo estás hoy?
Hi Pedro, how are you today?
-
Hola, me llamo Ana.
Hi, my name is Ana.
-
Hola a todos, bienvenidos a la fiesta.
Hi everyone, welcome to the party.
-
¡Hola! Hace tiempo que no te veo.
Hi! I haven’t seen you in a while.
So, if you want to say “hi” in Spanish, you just say hola!
The word hola has its roots in Old Spanish, likely influenced by the interjection hala (used to call attention, like “hey!”). Over time, it softened into the warm greeting we use today.
