The word for “no” in Portuguese is não.
Não is used both as the word “no” on its own and to form negative sentences.
Examples
-
Não, obrigado.
No, thank you.
-
Não, não quero ir.
No, I don’t want to go.
-
Não, não é verdade.
No, it isn’t true.
This makes it simple: just put não before the verb to create a negative.
Não percebo.
I don’t understand.
Não temos tempo.
We don’t have time.
Não, estou bem assim.
No, I’m fine like this.
Não comes from the Latin non, meaning “not.”
It’s the same root that gave English its no and Spanish its no.
