One of the most useful words to know in any language is “please.” In French, there are two main ways to say it, depending on how formal you want to be.
The most common phrase is s’il vous plaît (pronounced seel voo pleh).
It literally means “if it pleases you.”
Example
When talking to a friend, family member, or someone your own age, you can use the informal version: s’il te plaît (pronounced seel tuh pleh).
Example
-
S’il te plaît, mon chéri, peux-tu ouvrir la porte ?
Please, my dear, can you open the door?
S’il vous plaît → formal situations, strangers, or more than one person.
-
S’il te plaît → informal situations, friends, or children.
So, the French equivalent of “please” changes depending on context — but both are essential in polite French.
The phrase s’il vous plaît literally translates as “if it pleases you.” When you say it, you’re politely asking for someone’s favour or help in a respectful way.
