If you want to tell someone “take care” in French, there are a couple of ways depending on whom you’re speaking to.
The standard phrase is prends soin (pronounced prah(n) swahn).
You can also add de toi to make it clear you mean take care of yourself:
If you’re speaking to more than one person, or you want to be extra polite, you use the plural form:
Prends soin de toi et à la semaine prochaine !
Take care of yourself, and see you next week.
-
Il est important de prendre soin de soi.
It’s important to take care of yourself (literally: to take care of oneself).
So, prends soin is the basic way to say take care in French, but you’ll often hear prends soin de toi or prenez soin de vous.
The word soin comes from the Latin sonium, meaning attention or care. So when you say prends soin, you’re literally saying, “take care, give attention to yourself.”
