When saying goodbye in Spanish, a common and caring phrase is “take care.”
The most common way to say take care in Spanish is cuídate (pronounced KWEE-dah-teh).
Examples
-
Cuídate mucho y nos vemos pronto.
Take care and see you soon.
-
Recuerda ponerte el abrigo, cuídate.
Remember to wear your coat, take care.
If you’re speaking formally (to show respect) or addressing more than one person, you can use:
Examples
-
Cuídese, señora García.
Take care, Mrs. García.
-
¡Cuídense en el viaje!
Take care on your trip!
The word cuídate comes from the verb cuidar (to care for). It’s in the imperative form, literally meaning “take care of yourself.”
You’ll most often hear it as a friendly farewell when parting ways.
Cuidar comes from the Latin cogitāre, meaning to think or to be concerned about. Over time, it evolved into the idea of caring for someone or something attentively.
