When you’re learning French, one of the most important words to know is “thank you.” Let’s look at how to say it.
The phrase “thank you” in French is merci (pronounced mehr-see).
Example
You can make your thanks stronger by adding a word: merci beaucoup (thank you very much).
Examples
So, merci can mean both thank you and thanks in everyday French.
The word merci comes from the Latin mercedem, meaning reward or wages. So originally, saying merci was a way of saying, “I reward you with gratitude.”
