If you’re learning Spanish, one of the most important words to know is sí — the word for yes.
The Spanish word for “yes” is sí (pronounced see), with an accent over the í.
Examples
-
¿Quieres un café? – Sí, por favor.
Do you want a coffee? – Yes, please.
-
Sí, me encantaría ir al cine contigo.
Yes, I’d love to go to the cinema with you.
It’s important not to confuse:
-
sí (with accent) = yes
-
si (without accent) = if
That tiny accent mark completely changes the meaning!
¿Te gusta el chocolate? – ¡Sí!
Do you like chocolate? – Yes!
-
Sí, entiendo lo que dices.
Yes, I understand what you’re saying.
-
Sí, pero necesito pensarlo un poco más.
Yes, but I need to think about it a bit more.
So, to say “yes” in Spanish, always use sí with the accent.
The Spanish sí comes from the Latin adverb sic, meaning thus or so. Over time, it evolved into the simple, powerful yes we use in Spanish today.
